On your advice I again took this week super easy. Easy to the tune of taking multiple days off and only being marginally sure I tracked all my running. Everything is getting better still. A lot better actually and I decided I wasn't going to undo it by running.

0.60 (9:05), 1.00 (7:58), 0.61 (8:20), 1.00 (8:09) - This felt really good and easy. But my ankle was a little tight the next morning. It's been like that though. Tight until I warm up and tight again afterwards.

PM: 4M 8:57, 8:26, 8:03, 8:19 - This was another super easy run. I felt like I was jogging after a half mile warm up. I never flet like I was running at all.

I love how it takes being completely idiotic to learn a lesson sometimes. If I was anyone else I would have told myself to stop running for a couple weeks after that trail run where I gimped up my left ankle. Lots of ice and massage this week.
I'm probably going to take the first half of this week off. I'll do a small test Thursday. I really hope this week will finish this off.
On a positive note, I've been looking at the new Garmin 620 and am going to get it. The new features look really cool. My Soleus just isn't cutting it any more. So I'm going to give it to one of the girls at work. Hopefully it will get her to run more. I'm wondering if you think getting access to that information would be useful on your end?

I absolutely hate taking time off, but I ended up taking 6 weeks off completely when I had my calf issues. I felt slow and out of shape when I started back, but within 8 weeks I was running my highest mileage ever and feeling better than I did before on 1/2 the mileage. I know Lagat (about the same age as us) claims to take about 6 weeks off each year, and he seems to still be at the top of his game. I think you are doing the right thing for long term development.
ReplyDeleteThat watch looks incredible. I can believe how much lower the profile and lighter the 620 is. I have the original Garmin, and it still works great and finds satellites quickly, but its huge. I've been extremely impressed with the quality and longevity of my Garmin.
I can't wait to see how the legs feel on Thursday. When I started back I was very nervous the first 3 weeks, like I was expecting that calf tightening to come at any moment. Anytime I felt even the fairest hint of calf pressure, I would try to run with the best form I could and pay extra attention to any increases in pressure. Eventually, I realized the small pressure sensations weren't getting worse throughout the run, and they pretty much completely went away by week 4.
Good Luck.
Thanks. I'm finally ok with taking time off. Running in pain just go so old. I'm going to pick up a bait caster to keep me occupied for a bit. Lately fishing is the only thing I do that can replace running.
ReplyDeleteI'll post a comment Thursday about how things feel.
